Asthma is said to be hereditary. Some develop it early on in childhood, and some actually develop it as they grow older. They say that asthma can be very frightening and alarming because one cannot anticipate its exact attack and usually, it creates a panic, depending on how severe it is.

 Therefore, families of people with asthma are usually advised by doctors on how to handle an asthma attack, a sort of emergency plan to pacify it.

 But, as always, the best way to battle a bad asthma attack is prevention. Therefore, one who has developed asthma early on, someone who had a history of asthma but has not experienced it for a long time or someone who has an asthmatic family member, and who might actually develop asthma later, must prepare himself to the knowledge of what actually causes asthma.

 The following are some of the common causes of asthma, for which must be always prevented from getting in contact with: Allergens such as animal dander (from the skin, hair of feathers of animals), dust mites (contained in house dust), cockroaches, pollen from trees and grasses, and mold (indoor and outdoor);

 Irritants like cigarette smoke, air pollution, cold air or changes in weather, strong odors from painting or cooking, scented products and strong emotional expression (including crying and laughing hard) and stress; Other Causes like medicines such as aspirin and beta-blockers, sulfites in food (dried fruit or beverages (wine) and infections.

 This is not actually a complete list of all things that may cause asthma but these are the most commonly acquired in the environment.

And so to prevent a likely attack of asthma from the mentioned causes, one might consider doing the following: cleaning carpets, washing pillowcases and sheets in hot water weekly, washing hands regularly to avoid exposure to illness, removing rugs, carpets and drapes which collect dust, keeping windows closed, keeping air conditioning on but making sure ducts and filters are kept clean, and keeping animals outside.

 When an asthma attack is triggered by these, one must attend to immediate treatment and care for the victim, and an emergency plan must be structured beforehand so that panic will not ensue when the attack arises.
